YLA

CHEF is so pleased to be working with the Youth Leadership Academy, whose home base is at Elgin Community College. One of the important virtues that YLA instills in its cadets (middle and high school students who are called cadets and attend specialized classes every Saturday) is the virtue of volunteerism. In March 2019, several cadets from YLA helped CHEF with its first major public program—the ECC co-sponsored event: Rx: Nutrition, Let Food Be Thy Medicine. The cadets helped with set-up and take-down as well as with the participant check-in for nearly 100 people. They helped to distribute literature, and even helped serve the food samples that were being offered during the food demonstration portion of the program—and they all did a fabulous job. They were attentive and courteous. The cadets got the chance to interact with medical doctors, nurses, college professors, community leaders, and regular folks, as well as listen to the important information that was being offered during the half-day event. The cadets got a glimpse of what it takes to put on this kind of a program. ALL went home exhausted, but well satisfied for having done such a good job in service to others. Click here
