Rx for Healthy Seniors: Nutrition

With a grant from Elgin Township, and with the help of a number of partners like the Visiting Nurses Association, CHEF has been able to address one of the important parts of our core values--to provide important food education to senior citizens.  With this year-long grant project, CHEF has launched a program called Rx for Healthy Seniors:  Nutrition, that has evolved into a series of lectures called Lunch and Learn.  A delicious, nutritious meal is provided, accompanied by important information about why it is so important to eat healthy food from area experts such as Dr. Ashwani Garg, MD, who talked about Brain Health.  And PCRM Trained Food for Life Instructor Steffanie Ignoffo, who provided an exuberant food demo on how to create easy, low-cost meals and have fun doing it!   In November 2019, CHEF offered another Lunch and Learn with area Healthy Cooking Instructor Sherry Shrallow, heart attack survivor, cookbook author and cooking school instructor and her team of newly trained healthy cooks--all gathered to serve a group of seniors--one of whom coined the term we all liked and agreed to adopt--"Seasoned Citizens" as in food seasonings!  We all had a great laugh at calling ourselves "seasoned citizens!"  There is always literature to take home and a number of "goodies" and surprises to help reinforce the importance of eliminating processed foods and eating more fruits, veggies, beans and legumes, nuts and seeds--for a healthier diet to put more quality of living in our life.  More are instore for the remainder of this program that will be on-going for most of the year 2020!
